§ 01 / How it works

Two groups, a knockout, and a clock that doesn't care who you are.

Three stages. Twelve players become four, four become one.

  1. 1.♜
    Format: two groups, then a knockout
    Whatever the headcount, once registration closes everyone is drawn at random into two groups:
    Group stage
    Group Petrosian and Group Aronian, named after two Armenian greats. Play everyone in your group once. Win 3 · Draw 1 · Loss 0. The top two of each group advance.
    Semis & final
    Group winners meet the other group's runner-up. Winners play the final, losers play for third. No draws: replay until someone wins.

    Ten minutes each
    Every game, groups and knockouts alike, is played with a 10-minute timer per player (10+0, no increment). Colors by coin toss (or rock-paper-scissors, we're not picky).

    Ten minutes each
    Whatever the format, every game is played with a 10-minute timer per player (10+0, no increment). This one is not up for a vote.

    Play nice
    Standard chess rules apply. Touch-move, be nice, have fun.

    Your game, your schedule
    Once pairings are out you get an email introducing your opponent, with a link to report the result. Reply to agree a time, meet at the chess sets in the kitchen on floor 4 or 5, play, then report.
